There is a rumor that it was composed by Henry the 8th. However, it’s beginnings most likely lie in the Elizabethan era. We know by the late 1600’s, the tune was found in Christmas carol collections. One of the most famous examples of the tunes uses is in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix in “What Child is This?”
