Jingle Bells History

This song was written in 1850 by James Pierpont, originally called “One Horse Open Sleigh.”  It originally had no connection to the Christmas holiday, being sung as a Thanksgiving tune.  The “Jingle bells” in the title refers to the bells people would put on their horses at the time.  These bells allowed people to hear when the horses were approaching an intersection or busy area to avoid collisions.
