Alternate String Pull-offs

A common left-hand technique used by many clawhammer banjo players is called alternate string pull-offs. I can’t say I’ve seen these used much at all by Scruggs-style or three finger banjoists. Here is a video where I breakdown the technique.

A basic breakdown of the steps involved:

  • Play a string
  • Hit the adjacent string with your left hand only (I call it a flick)
  • Play another string
  • Flick the string

It doesn’t always have to be the adjacent string, but that is how it’s used in clawhammer the most.  I recommend listening to Dan Gellert for a GREAT example of how to use these in your clawhammer playing.

Here is an original tune I wrote entitled “The Last Flicker” where I take these alternate string pull-offs a bit further.

Looking for some good string for clawhammer or open back fingerstyle playing?  I use these Ernie Ball Frailing strings on my Romero open back.  They are slightly heavier, so they stay in tune a bit better and give a nice warm sound:
