Melodic Scale WORKOUT

Banjo Scales in Melodic Style

Here is a MAJOR scale WORKOUT done in the melodic style.  I group the scales in 3-4-5’s so you can gradually become more flexible with them. These exercises are a good next step for someone that already knows their basic G,C, and D scales on the banjo.

Why? Generally within a song, you don’t encounter a scale starting on the first note and going all the way up, this will prepare you for the shorter fragments you might find in actual music.

Melodic Style banjo is perhaps one of the most difficult (if not THE most difficult) style to improvise with.  You have to really know the scales inside and out as there is no set right-hand pattern to fall back on, there is no set left-hand fingering that works regardless of the key.
